Do’s and Don’ts When You’re Running Late to School

When you’re up against the clock, it’s tempting to take risks you wouldn’t typically take. But ultimately, arriving safely is more important than arriving on time. So if you find yourself frequently running late to school, here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.

Don’t speed

It’s so easy to speed without even realizing it, particularly if you’re running late to school. But tardiness isn’t an excuse to break the law. Plus, speeding could make you even later, because it might result in you getting pulled over or getting into an accident.

Buckle up

Have you ever been in such a hurry to get to school on time that you forgot to buckle your kids in? Stress can sometimes cause us to make hasty decisions like this, but it’s important to always remember to buckle everyone in properly before rushing off to school. You may rationalize or worry that your kids will get in trouble for being late, but gambling your kids’ lives for the sake of arriving before the bell rings is a risk you should never, ever take.

Follow drop-off procedures

While tardiness may seem like a legitimate reason to just drop your kid off wherever it’s convenient, your school would probably beg to differ. Even if your child is already 10 or 15 minutes late, have them get out at your school’s designated drop-off location, as this is most likely the safest place for your child to exit your vehicle.

If your family seems to always be running late to school, try giving everyone more time to get ready in the morning. Be sure to also factor in expected traffic delays and any other stops you typically make, such as grabbing breakfast or coffee on the way.
