Breaking down can be inconvenient, breaking down at night can be both inconvenient and dangerous. Here are some tips to remember if your car breaks down after dark.
Don’t panic
Having your car die or some mechanism fail/malfunction can be really scary, particularly at night. Try not to panic, though, as panic will only hamper your decision-making. Stay calm and focused. Remind yourself that the minute other drivers notice you are having trouble or are stuck, they should slow down and go around you. Make sure you turn on your hazards to alert them and move cautiously out of traffic (if you can).

Call someone
If you’re on your way to a function, work, or a party, you want to make sure you call your boss, family member, or friend to let them know you will be late or unable to make it. Even if you’re just headed home to your spouse, they need to know where you are and that you’re safe. You may also need to call for help getting a ride home.
Once you’ve notified someone of your situation, call a tow truck. A tow will safely get your car to a mechanic so that it can get fixed. Make sure you have the number of a trustworthy towing company in your phone, just in case you don’t have data or signal to look up one on the spot.
Stay alert
Once you’ve made arrangements for a tow, get back in your car and lock your doors. Don’t take a nap or get too wrapped up on your phone because you will need to save your battery life in case of an emergency. You also want to be sure you are paying attention to what is happening around you so that you can stay safe.
