How to Decide Whether or Not You Need to Call a Tow

call a tow

If your car breaks down and you’re now stuck on the side of the highway, here are some questions to ask yourself as you’re trying to decide whether or not you need to call a tow.

1. Can I fix the problem easily myself?

If your car is simply out of gas, you know exactly what the problem is. Looking up the nearest gas station and walking to buy some gas is an easy, albeit annoying, way to solve your problem. Flat tires, overheating, and other car problems like this are relatively easy to fix on your own too.

2. Do I know someone who lives nearby who could help me?

Say your car battery dies–suddenly you have a car that cannot run and needs a jump. If you know someone nearby or can hail a friendly passerby, you could probably get a jump, get things running again, and be on your way. (This is why it’s important to keep jumper cables and a couple of tools in your car.)

3. Would it be easier/safer to call a tow?

If you don’t have the tools you need on-hand, or if the issue requires a time-consuming fix, or if you break down at night, the best decision is to call a tow. Calling a tow is more convenient than trying to fix your car on the side of the road. It may be safer, too, particularly if you have children or pets with you and it’s a hot day.

Having trouble deciding whether or not you need to call a tow?
When in doubt, call a tow. It will give you much-needed peace of mind knowing that someone is on the way to help you!
